ACADEMIC SUMMER CAMPS

Step-Up ONE For Success Summer Reading Program

Lisa Caparelli-Ruff - lcaparelli-ruff@montini.org

Freshmen: The “Step Up” Summer Reading Program:  This program is designed for students who have struggled with “scholarly pursuits” in the past.  The class will give realistic options helping students avoid typical problems:  general disorganization, missing/unsatisfactory homework assignments, unfocused notes, classroom boredom, low test scores, and poorly written essays.  The most practical function of the class will be to guide students through reading the MANDATORY SUMMER READING BOOK that every incoming freshman must read for the first day of school.  We will take practice tests and quizzes while reading the book at a comfortable pace.  This class builds ability in students who lack confidence, and it also builds confidence in students unsure of what the high school years will bring them.

RECOMMENDED FOR:  Incoming freshmen enrolled in Montini’s General Education Program and incoming freshmen enrolled in regular English that have struggled with reading, writing, and study skills in the past.

OTHER INFORMATION
Cost:  $225 per student for the two week course (10 classes) The fee includes the cost of the summer reading book which will be distributed in class and also used in the first few weeks of school.  Discounts will not be given for students missing portions of the class.  If you have siblings coming, the fee will be $325 for two. If students are unable to attend classes, I will make sure they obtain the missing material.

Ages: Incoming Freshmen
Dates: June 19-23; June 26-30
Times: 11:30AM - 1:30PM
Cost: $225 per student; with a sibling, $325

Step-Up TWO for Success Summer Reading Program

Laura Medina - lmedina@montini.org

The months between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next are among the most critical for any student. In this time span, a student can lose valuable academic skills simply because he/she is out of practice during lengthy breaks. With a little bit of dedication to a routine, however, students can avoid the typical “lag time” that plagues so many of them when August arrives.

As your son/daughter transitions to sophomore year, Montini Catholic’s summer school program has designed a course in which students can avoid such delays. In the Step Up 2 Program, he/she will not only be guided in their summer reading and writing assignment for Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson but will also progress in his/her study skills. Additionally, strategies on note-taking (within and outside of the iPad), essay writing, studying and speeches - an important component of English 10 - will be provided.

The most practical function of the class will be to guide students through their mandatory summer reading and writing assignment. With new expectations for all sophomores, it is to his/her benefit to pace the work appropriately, so as not to be overloaded with it when the school year begins. Partner and group work, as well as practice assessments, will be provided not only to build comprehension but also to build confidence in preparation of the expectations of the first day of school.

All sophomores - regular, general education and honors students - are welcomed for this summer course, which is scheduled for June 19-30 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The cost is $200 per student ($300 for a pair of siblings) and will include the summer reading novel (borrowed from Montini Catholic) and any/all resources (for example, digital and printed materials) to guide the student to a more successful sophomore year.

Students are expected to bring their iPads during the summer session, which extends through 10 classes within the course. Discounts will not be offered for extended time away from class; however, if extenuating circumstances arise, materials will be provided for the day(s) missed. Please notify me (lmedina@montini.org) with any questions.

Ages: Sophomores
Dates: June 19 - June 23; June 26 - June 30
Times: 8:30-10:30AM
Cost: $200 per student; with a sibling, $300

Spanish Learning Program

Hilda Castor – hcastor@montini.org

This program will help your son or daughter find success in Spanish class regardless of their level in Spanish. The focus of the program is reading, writing, speaking and listening. As a Spanish teacher, I find that the more prepared students are the better success they will have. Students will gain a basis in Spanish levels I and II through a variety of methods including singing songs, reading short stories, writing, speaking and playing fun educational games to enhance their learning.

In this 3 week course, I will teach your son or daughter how to find success in the classroom with easy to follow strategies. Having taught Spanish for 15 years, I have accumulated experience in how to prepare and encourage students to be successful in Spanish class. Don’t miss this opportunity to help your son or daughter to be prepared and have the right skills to start Spanish class in the fall of 2017.

Summer Math Program

Barry Briggs - bbriggs@montini.org

Welcome to Montini Catholic High School! Incoming freshmen face a multitude of challenges, including a more rigorous mathematics curriculum. Our records indicate that your child could benefit from our summer math program to enrich their skill set.

Experience indicates that students who struggle with math generally drop at least oneletter grade as they move to the next level. This often discourages students and causes a negative attitude toward math. With the emphasis of math scores on ACT’s, SAT’s, and college entrance exams, it is important your child develop good math skills.

This summer math program is designed to reinforce what they have been taught before high school and fill in the gaps that we have noticed from past incoming freshmen classes. In addition, students will be introduced to Algebra I concepts they will encounter their freshman year. We urge you to consider this opportunity to bring your child’s math skills up to speed to help them succeed their freshman year. Students must bring their own calculator, notebook, and pencils/pens.

Ages: Incoming Freshmen
Dates: Two Week Class:  June 19-23 and June 26-30
Times: 9:00AM - 11:00AM
