On Friday, October 25th, Montini Catholic High School in Lombard celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the 2009 Class 5A State Champion Montini Broncos. Members of this historic team were invited to the newly renovated Vince Gavin Stadium Club to reminisce and enjoy 'guests of honor' status at the Bronco's last home game of the regular season.
"We faced adversity all year, rebounding from a 5-4 regular season record and winning four straight playoff games to make our second ever appearance in a state championship game (facing Joliet Catholic)," said Head Coach at the time, Chris Andriano who celebrated the win with his former team. "The Hilltoppers were heavily favored to win the game and add to their state title collection, but we had other ideas!"
Montini fell behind early and fought back into the game, and started a drive deep in their own
territory with less than 3 minutes left in the game. With 32 seconds left, the Broncos scored a touchdown to cut the deficit to one, and instead of kicking the extra point, they went for two and the win.
"When the final horn sounded, the Broncos had claimed their second state championship with a 29-28 victory over the Hilltoppers," said game announcer, Dave Walsh, as the team made their way out onto the field during halftime. "It is still considered one of the greatest upsets in IHSA State Championship History!"
The win set in motion an unforgettable stretch in Montini history, as the Broncos made an appearance in a state title game each of the next six seasons, winning titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015.
“Our 2009 State Championship team - under the leadership of the legendary Coach A - dug deep and pulled off a truly remarkable season," said Rob Piper '10, a member of the legendary team. "It was great to join some of the guys to celebrate the 10 year anniversary.”
"We've got several more ten year anniversaries coming up now due to our unbelievable stretch," said President Jim Segredo. "We're looking forward to celebrating these victories and will hopefully add another one to the list this season!"
