Montini Catholic is proud to announce the addition of Mike Benefiel '07 to their award winning coaching staff.  He has been selected as the new Head Coach of the Bronco Championship Wrestling Team.

"Mike takes over the program after having wrestled as a Bronco student athlete at Montini and serving as Assistant Coach for the last 6 years where he has seen our Broncos through to four state championships," said Principal Kevin Beirne.  "We’re confident that under his leadership, not only will our wrestlers’ skills continue to improve, but they’ll have a strong and consistent role model. Further, we feel Coach Benefiel is best positioned to continue the incredible success the wrestling program and the student athletes in it have been able to achieve for more than 20 years."

Prior to his coaching career at Montini Catholic, Benefiel wrestled collegiately at Oklahoma State University and Elmhurst College.  He was the 2013 NCAA Division III Champion at 197 pounds. At OSU, he was a two-time Big 12 finalist while qualifying twice for the NCAA Division I Championships. He was also the University Freestyle National Champion at 79kg in 2009.

Benefiel completed his prep career at Montini where he was a 4-time State Champion, 2-time Ironman Champion, 3-time Freestyle All-American and 2-time National Champion at Fargo, and the 2007 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award Winner.  He became the ninth person in Illinois state history to win the state wrestling title all four years of high school with titles at 119 lbs., 140 lbs., 152 lbs. and 171 pounds.  He finished his Bronco career as the all-time wins leader in IHSA history with 200 career victories.
