Montini Catholic senior Luke Ruff has set his sights on becoming a Saint this fall - a Holy Cross College Saint, that is. Through the college's highly selective process, Luke has been awarded and recognized for his strong leadership skills and service with the Moreau Signature Scholarship at Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, IN. Admissions Director, Jonathan Hake, informed that the school was quite impressed with Luke after reviewing his achievements as a student at Montini Catholic and interviewing him as a candidate for the prestigious scholarship.
"Signature Scholarships are Holy Cross College’s way of recognizing students who have special gifts to share with our campus community," said Mr. Hake. "These students embody talents, passions, and characteristics that will advance the mission of Holy Cross in faith, service, academics, and athletic excellence." Luke had already secured over $200,000 in academic scholarship offers from various colleges before securing, the Moreau Signature Scholarship.
"The interview was both formal and conversational in nature," said Luke, who plans on majoring in Biology, specifically Agricultural Science. "The staff at Holy Cross wanted to get to know me as an individual and student and learn about my interests." Luke met with the chair of the Biology Department and says that he truly was made to feel like a person, not just a number. "I had breakfast with the Vice President of the college, toured the campus, attended Mass and had a root beer float," he added. (Notre Dame's traditional Root Beer Float Masses are held every Wednesday.) He was very excited to be able to tour the Notre Dame campus while there.
Luke is a well-rounded student at Montini who greatly enjoys service opportunities. Recently he took part in a visit to Marklund (a residential care facility for disabled people) and he looks forward every year to participating in Montini's Golden Gobbler Food Drive at Thanksgiving. He also donates his time at TLC Animal Shelter in his hometown of Homer Glen. Luke is involved in Soccer and Track and is a member of Montini's National Honor Society and Math Club. "I feel that Math Club has been great at preparing me for college as well as displaying what true leadership looks like," he said. "Mrs. (Chrissy) McManus and Mr. (Don) Krystof have been excellent mentors and I cannot say enough great things about either of them!"
Luke is looking forward to attending Holy Cross where the school's mantra is 'Scholar, Citizen, Leader, Disciple.' "The direct link that Holy Cross has to Notre Dame and St. Mary's will make this an interesting tri-campus experience," he said, adding. "The Driscoll Scholars Program allows for a 2 year experience at Holy Cross and 2 years at Notre Dame - graduating from Notre Dame!"
"We congratulate Luke on this impressive accomplishment," said Principal Kevin Beirne. "We have no doubt that he will be a huge success in college at Holy Cross and beyond."
