Montini Catholic congratulates Head Girls Basketball Varsity Coach Shannon Spanos '99 on her nomination as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA), District 7, Co-Coach of the Year.  She will be honored at the IBCA's 50th Annual Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Saturday, April 30th at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University.

While a student athlete at Montini Catholic, Spanos earned twelve varsity letters participating in varsity basketball, softball, and volleyball. She was awarded All-Area and All-Conference honors in basketball and volleyball while scoring more than a 1,000 points in her four year varsity basketball career. Following a successful academic and athletic career at Montini, Spanos was recruited to Trinity College in Hartford, CT – a top-tier Liberal Arts University in the NESCAC Conference (New England Small College Athletic Conference) where she went on to a successful college playing career.  She began her Bronco coaching career in 2020 and has quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the realm of girls high school basketball.

Coach Spanos and her Lady Broncos had high hopes for the 2021/2022 season and they did not disappoint. After a shortened 20/21 season due to the pandemic, they were eager to play a full schedule against the state’s top teams in the highly competitive GCAC conference. The team came out extremely strong while facing tough conference opponents and went undefeated in the GCAC conference, winning the GCAC Conference Title. The Lady Broncos won 11 games in a row and continued their command by winning the Regional Title for the 17th year in a row. In the final game of the season, the Broncos lost the Sectional Final to Sycamore in a close game 57-56. "We ended the season 25-9. The twenty five wins season had many highlights and many accolades for our program," said Spanos.  "We are looking forward to a great 2022/2023 season!"

"We are proud of the accomplishments of our Girls Basketball team this season," said Athletic Director Brian Casey.  "Coach Spanos was obviously very instrumental in that. She most certainly deserves this honor as she did a tremendous job in her first "real" (non-Covid) season of getting our girls to perform at a high level on a night in-night out basis. Going undefeated in the GCAC throughout the regular season and advancing to a Sectional Final is no small feat. Throughout the season, our team was prepared, they adjusted well, and most importantly, the girls played hard! We are excited for this recognition for Coach Spanos as well as the future of Lady Bronco Basketball!"
