Montini Catholic recently congratulated senior, (OL/DL) Michael McNicholas, for his commitment to join Kent State University's football program in the fall of 2019. McNicholas, who has held a passion for football since 8th grade, is looking very forward to his future as a Golden Flash! He formally committed on National Football Early Signing Day, Wednesday, December 19th.
This fall, CCL's All Conference, Mike was instrumental in taking his Broncos to the 2nd Place title in the 5A State Championship and is glad to have been a part of the team's 2015 State Championship. Mike has also competed as a Bronco Wrestler (helping take the team to their 2018 State Championship) and a member of the Track and Field Team. But, it's the kinship of football that he will always hold dear. "The bond formed with your brothers is unbreakable on and off the field." (The comradery of the team was evident when Bronco teammates gathered around him on Signing Day to congratulate him as he made his commitment to Kent State.)
Mike is looking forward to his academic life post high-school and is considering a career in Sports Management and Education. He is also ready to further his skills at the collegiate level in football.Although he considered University of South Dakota, South Dakoa State, Western Illinois, Illinois State, University of New Mexico, University of Missouri and Eastern Illinois, it was Kent State that represented the proper fit for Mike. "After visiting Kent State and spending time with their coaching staff, I realized their coaching style would help me to excel as a student and as a player," he said. "Their campus is beautiful and has a lot to offer both on the football field and for my education."
Mother, Kerri (McNicholas) is very excited about her son's future as a Golden Flash. "My mom couldn't be prouder of me! She has been in my corner my whole life encouraging me to always do my best!"
"Mike has had a great career thus far at Montini Catholic," says Coach Mike Bukovsky. "As a senior captain, he has demonstrated the work ethic and values that are at the core of the Bronco Football Program, and is a big reason behind our tremendous success this season. We are very proud and excited he will be continuing his football journey at Kent State University, and we wish him great success as a student athlete, Go Golden Flashes!!"
Mike is extremely honored to have been selected this year to play in the 2019 Blue-Grey All American Bowl (January 14, 2019) in Houston Texas (to be shown on ESPN3) to represent Montini and its football program.
"Montini teachers, staff, and coaches have always wanted me to succeed and made sure over the last 4 years that they have given me the skills and tools to be the man I am today. To sum up my experience at Montini in only few words, it would be 'Montini inspires greatness' ."
Michael McNicholas is from Lombard and attended Glen Westlake Middle School and is a member of The Compass Church in Wheaton.
