Here is your Hour of Code word for the day: Algorithm. An algorithm is a well-defined step-by-step method for solving a particular type of task or problem. We use algorithms to solve problems everyday whether we know it or not. Many algorithms are expressed in computer code but the oldest recorded algorithms go back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and Babylonia. Ancient Greek mathematicians such as Euclid created algorithms that are still used today. The word algorithm comes from Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi who was a Persian scholar in Baghdad in the early 9th Century AD who produced brilliant works in mathematics, astronomy, and geography. He is sometimes called the father of Algebra and when his works spread to Europe his name was translated as Algoritmi. Google's PageRank algorithm is a powerful tool that most of us depend on every day. Our phones, iPads, and computers rely on algorithms like Merge Sort, Fourier Transform, RSA, data compression, and many more. Can you think of any ways you use algorithms in your everyday life?

Students in violation of these policies will be subject to disciplinary actions.
