Montini Catholic principal, Maryann O'Neill was awarded the Lombard Jaycee's Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented on Wednesday, May 9th during their Man of the Year/Distinguished Service Award Ceremony held at Lombard's Village Hall.
Mrs. O'Neill was nominated for the award by Fred and Linda Stumbaugh, residents of Lombard for 40+ years and active in many community projects. Their children Becky ('99) and Paul ('02) were both students at Montini Catholic. "(After graduating from Montini) they were well prepared for college and life," said Stumbaugh.
"The idea to nominate Maryann came from a conversation among a number of her friends," explained Stumbaugh. "We felt strongly that her many years of service to Montini should not go unrecognized by our community and are very happy that she received the award."
In his letter the selection committee, Stumbaugh wrote:
Maryann has announced that she is stepping down from her position as principal of Montini High School after 32 years of service (14 years as principal). During those years, many of Lombard's young people, including our children, have passed through the halls of Montini and moved on to success in their college careers and in their later lives. Maryann deserves much of the credit for that. Montini itself has grown and achieved much success in that time. It has a reputation for excellence in all aspects of secondary education: academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. Montini's success has helped to enhance the reputation and image of Lombard as a desirable place to live and raise a family. Maryann is in no small measure responsible for this.
Besides Maryann's contributions to our community as principal at Montini, she is also a longtime resident of Lombard and a longtime downtown business owner (O'Neill's Pub). She and her family have been active in our community for many, many years. Her late husband, Ed, was at one time a village trustee.
Mrs. O'Neill was very surprised and honored to receive the award. Montini Catholic will be holding a special open house/reception in her honor on Thursday, May 24th (from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria) for friends, alumni and families to celebrate Maryann's 14 years as principal of Montini, as well as her 32 years of service to the Lasallian high school.
