Students Celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass

And, begin the Lenten Season of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
Montini Catholic students, faculty and staff gathered on February 18th to celebrate Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season.  Lent is a solemn forty day period of fasting and penitence, ending at sundown on Holy Thursday and observed by Catholics as they prepare for the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday (April 5th).

Fr. John Eustice, CSV (of St. Viator High School), celebrated Mass with the students.  After Mass senior Nishika Karthi (Addison) gave a beautiful reflection on the three pillars of Lent - prayer, fasting and almsgiving - which are expressions of the fundamental purpose of Lent, which is to turn to God in a conversion of heart.

Following Mass, senior Nishika Karthi (Addison) offered a heartfelt reflection on the three pillars of Lent - prayer, fasting and almsgiving - reminding her classmates that these practices ultimately call us to  a renewed relationship with God.

"Lent is centered on three pillars which are fasting, prayer and almsgiving," she said. "When we start this season of reverence, we should focus on being better Catholics, not only for God, but also for ourselves." Nishika also encouraged her peers to look beyond the outward observances of the season and to embrace its deeper meaning.  "This season isn’t just about the physical acts that we go through, but the reason we’re doing it. Lent isn’t about being perfect, but by trying everyday to strengthen our relationship with God. Through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, we can focus on how to be better Catholics. We can use the family that we have created at Montini and grow closer to God. I hope this season of Lent is a time of reflection, gratitude, and transformation for everybody."
