Students explored everything from how flavors are developed to how their senses experience taste and smell!
Montini Catholic's Advanced Biology class, under the direction of teacher and Department Chair Sandy Deiber, took a “tasty” field trip to Flavorchem recently. The Downers Grove corporation creates more than 5,000 flavors, fragrances, and food products each year. The students got a hands-on look at how science shows up in the real world - exploring everything from how flavors are developed to how their senses experience taste and smell. In addition to learning about exciting career opportunities in food science - they were glad to meet former Montini student Samantha Richmond Filip '10 who works at Flavorchem as their Manager of Sensory Science.
"Our visit to Flavorchem was like seeing the 'behind-the-scenes' of our favorite snacks," said Mrs. Deiber. "It’s one thing to taste a flavor, but it’s another thing entirely to see the chemistry and creativity that goes into making it. Truly educational and eye-opening."
Montini Catholic High School offers advanced science curriculum, which includes AP/Honors/Advanced Biology, AP/Honors/College Prep Chemistry and AP/Honors/College Prep Physics I - preparing students for college-level work.
