Two Students Recognized for Excellence in Math

Congratulations to Naomi Tang on earning the 2026 Gerry Marcoux Memorial Scholarship and Gavin Conway on earning the 2026 Robert Huntoon Memorial Scholarship.

Montini Catholic congratulates two exceptional mathletes.  Gavin Conway '27 recently earned the Lasallian college preparatory high school's 2026 Robert Huntoon Memorial Scholarship, and Yingying (Naomi) Tang '27 earned the Gerry Marcoux Memorial Scholarship.  The recipients were selected by members of the Montini Catholic Mathematics Department.

The awards, presented to Bronco students entering his/her senior year and demonstrating excellence in math, were announced earlier this spring at Montini's Math Awards.  Naomi and Gavin were also honored during the Lasallian college preparatory school's Celebration of Excellence celebration on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Gavin was inducted into Montini Catholic's National Honor Society this past fall 2025 and has been a member of  Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society since his freshman year. Both Gavin and Naomi are vital members of the Bronco Math Team, helping to secure a 6th place finish for Montini at the 2026 ICTM State Championship.  Gavin was also member of the Calculator Team, which was crowned ICTM State Champions this year at the State Championship.

The Robert Huntoon Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student each year who best exemplifies excellence and achievement in mathematics. The scholarship is named in honor of former Math Department Chair Robert Huntoon, whose impact on Montini Catholic mathematics education continues to this day. Mr. Huntoon founded the Bronco Math Team and conceived the idea for Montini’s annual Math Contest, helping establish a culture of academic competition, problem-solving and mathematical excellence at Montini. This scholarship recognizes a student who reflects that same passion for mathematics, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to academic achievement.

"Gavin is an exemplary mathematician," said President Kevin Beirne.  "He is a two-time state champion and an integral member of the Montini Math Team. In addition to his impressive accomplishments in competition, he is an outstanding student in the classroom. He approaches mathematics with both efficiency and accuracy, while also encouraging collaboration among his peers. His enthusiasm for learning is contagious and elevates those around him."

The Gerry Marcoux Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an exceptional mathematics student in honor of longtime Montini teacher, Math Team coach, and National Honor Society moderator Gerry Marcoux. Mr. Marcoux was deeply committed to academic excellence and challenged generations of students to pursue knowledge with discipline, curiosity, and integrity. The scholarship recognizes a student who not only demonstrates outstanding achievement in mathematics, but who also reflects the dedication, leadership, humility, and love of learning that Mr. Marcoux brought to our school community each day.

"Naomi has made mathematics an important part of her Montini experience," said President Beirne. "Since arriving at Montini, she has attended every Mu Alpha Theta meeting and has been a dedicated member of both Math Club and Math Team. Beyond her outstanding accomplishments, she is known for the positivity and kindness she brings to others -  always offering a smile, an encouraging word, or a helping hand to her teammates and classmates. As a member of the Math Team, Naomi has excelled in every competition she has entered, earning numerous medals and recognitions both individually and as part of the team. Her talent, commitment, and character truly make her exceptional."
