2026 John L. Duffy Memorial Scholarship Awarded

Montini Catholic Bronco Michael Breier '27 is the recipient of the 2026 John L. Duffy Memorial Scholarship, established in 2022 by Mr. Stephen McPartlan in memory of his stepbrother, John L. Duffy, a member of Montini Catholic’s inaugural Class of 1970 and the school’s very first athletic manager. This scholarship honors John’s lasting connection to Montini and recognizes students whose service behind the scenes helps strengthen and support our athletic community. While student-athletes often receive the spotlight, this scholarship celebrates those whose dedication, reliability, creativity and school spirit make an important impact on our athletic programs and the broader Montini community.

"Michael has embraced the spirit of John L. Duffy's impact on Montini in remarkable ways," said President Kevin Beirne.  "Through his talents and initiative, he has helped capture and promote the excitement of Montini Athletics by taking action photos and video at varsity contests and sharing them with our school community and student-athletes. He does this solely because of his enthusiasm for Montini and his love of photography.  Michael also created the reception video for this year’s Varsity Athletic Awards Night, helping preserve and celebrate the accomplishments of our teams and athletes."

Earlier in the school year, Bronco Head Football Coach Mike Bukovsky nominated Michael for Student of the Month accolades for his dedication to Montini athletics.  "Michael has shared his numerous talents this year with our Bronco Football Program! He has designed numerous PR pieces, served as a photographer and created and edited our highlight films. He also helped our sideline communication and film review effort. He was instumental in the success and promotion of our football program. Michael is also involved with many other aspects of Montini, and is always a very positive example of Bronco Pride!"

John L. Duffy made Bronco history at a young age - becoming the school's first athletic manager. He will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Bronco fans. He was diagnosed with leukemia midway through his eighth grade year. And although he suited up and began living out his dream on the Bronco team, his physical limitations put him at risk. A few weeks into the season, Coach Jim Kavanaugh appointed John as “Montini’s first ever athletic manager.”

John L. died of leukemia near the end of his sophomore year on April 3, 1968.  That fall, Coach Kavanaugh requested that the new stadium be named in honor of John, pointing out John’s commitment and loyalty to his team and school along with his unselfish and non-complaining spirit, even in the midst of intense, physical, bone marrow pain.

Michael received his award during Montini Catholic's Celebration of Excellence Award Ceremony on May 15, 2026.

Montini Catholic is a Lasallian college preparatory high school located in Lombard, Illinois (DuPage County).
