Spirit of 76 Award Presented to Senior Angelo DeSensi

Montini Catholic football fans will never forget the impact Johnny Weiger had on them and they hope to keep his legacy alive through the Spirit of 76 Award.
On Friday, September 12th, the Montini Catholic family gathered to celebrate and remember the life of Johnny Weiger ’15† — a Bronco whose spirit continues to inspire. Family, friends, and fans filled the stands for the annual Charity Game, honoring Johnny’s memory and supporting the Johnathan Weiger Memorial Scholarship Fund. Before kickoff, Bronco Nation showed their love by purchasing commemorative t-shirts, split-the-pot tickets, and other keepsakes - turning the night into more than just a football game. It was a powerful reminder that Johnny’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him, and in the opportunities this scholarship provides for future Broncos.

In conjunction with the charity game and prior to the varsity kick-off, the Weiger Family presented their "Spirit of '76" Award in memory of Johnny to senior Angelo DeSensi (from Addison).  In Johnathan's memory, the Weiger Family presents this special award each year to a unique member of the varsity football team.  With help from staff and coaches, they choose the player who best embodies that of great character, faith and sportsmanship.  Angelo is the 13th player to be honored with the "Spirit of 76" award. "Jimmy is a great example of a Montini student who embodies all of the attributes that Johnny Weiger exhibited in his short time at Montini," said Head Varsity Coach Michael Bukovsky.  "He is a multiple sport athlete, with an outstanding GPA and is a tremendous role model to everyone in our Bronco community. Jimmy demonstrates a strong commitment to his faith and an outstanding character in everything he does."

Johnny Weiger became part of Montini Catholic’s community in the 2011–12 school year as a member of the Class of 2015. A student of deep faith and remarkable character, he was also a talented member of the freshman football team. Johnny was passionate about both Montini Catholic and Notre Dame football, nurturing a dream of one day playing for the Fighting Irish.

During his freshman year, Johnny was diagnosed with leukemia and, sadly, passed away on November 4, 2012, at the start of his sophomore year. His jersey number, 76, was retired last year in honor of the young man whose impact on the Montini community continues to be felt.

As a tribute to their teammate, the football team has worn special uniforms each year at the “Spirit of ’76” game. Bronco fans have joined in by wearing orange, supporting Johnny’s family and helping raise awareness for leukemia — keeping his memory and mission alive in the hearts of all who knew him.

Throughout Johnny's battle, Montini's school community adopted the saying “Johnny Always Wins,” a saying that was displayed on orange wristbands, candy wrappers, t-shirts and football stadium banners.  Johnny’s winning spirit was with the Broncos throughout their journey to their 4th consecutive IHSA State 5A Football Championship.  During his battle with leukemia and TTP, Johnny displayed the spirit of a champion.  He always showed great character, courage, fight and a deep commitment to his faith.  The "Spirit of '76" Award pays tribute to Johnny and the positive influence he has had on his teammates and peers.
