Congratulations, Mikaelah Thomas!

Montini Catholic senior Mikaelah Thomas (Westchester) has been named Bronco Artist of the Month for December.   She was nominated for the honor by Art teacher Stephanie Kuecker.

"Mikaelah has taken multiple art classes and has truly shown dedication to her craft," said Ms. Kuecker. "She takes her art very seriously, drawing her inspiration from street art. Her work is great and very personal to her - she has a truly unique style."

"I was very shocked to know that I had the opportunity to be recognized for my art work," said Mikaelah, who developed an interest in art during her art classes at Westchester Middle School.  Her favorite medium is acrylics.  "My favorite thing about being an artist is being able to create anything you want without rules and regulations.  I started painting with my best friend and have loved it ever since."

Ms. Kuecker has enjoyed teaching Mikaelah over the past four years. Mikaelah has been very receptive to her teacher's artistic advice and suggestions. "It is very easy and fun because Ms. K lets you explore yourself in the way of art."

Mikaelah has pursued other interests as well as a very involved student at Montini. She is a member of the Lady Bronco Softball Team and the Montini Maniacs (Spirit Club). She also enjoys Baking Club and was selected to be a Peer Minister this year - helping to inspire and empower her fellow Broncos through service. She hopes to keep art in her future - with a goal of pursuing a business marketing degree in college next fall, she plans on painting in her free time and perhaps as a college elective.

"Mikaelah works hard - she really deserves this award," said Ms. Kuecker. "She is such a fun person and it has really been a pleasure to teach her. Congratulations, Mikaelah!"

This month, Montini Catholic's Band is celebrating a National Champion (Class A) title in the National Catholic Band Association's national band competition. "We are incredibly proud," said the Lasallian college preparatory high school's Music Director Donnie Glowinski. "This is the first time in school history that Montini Catholic has earned this title." Each year, Catholic high schools from across the country are invited to submit performance recordings to be adjudicated by a panel of expert judges. "This prestigious honor is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of our student musicians. Their commitment to excellence has brought great pride to our school community," added Glowinski. "Every year, we work on becoming better musicians, and every year, the band rises to the challenge. I am so unbelievably proud of the work this group has done this year and everything they have accomplished. I am really looking forward to the future to see what these students will be able to do!" In the summer of 1953 a small group of concerned band directors, led by Director of Bands Robert F. O’Brien, met on the campus of the University of Notre Dame to discuss the Catholic School Band, its particular problems, and what might be done to further its development. Fr. Theodore Hesburgh Notre Dame President, gave the welcome speech. Mr. O’Brien then proposed goals for the organization and the NCBA was born. Today, NCBA's office is located at Villanova University Office of Music Activities. The NCBA recognizes the value of music within the Catholic school community. Their mission is to establish high musical, educational and ethical standards in Catholic schools' band programs.
